Experts estimate that about half of women experience low back pain or pelvic region pain at some point during their pregnancy. Common causes of back pain during pregnancy are typically related to two general structures of the lower back: the sacroiliac joint and the lumbar spine.
A study published in the July 2014 issue of Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine reviewed the best published research regarding the benefits of physical therapy in treating back and pelvic pain during and after pregnancy. They found that exercises can decrease pain, improve function and limit sick leave for pregnancy-related back and pelvic pain.
